But more importantly, there have been so many good (and even great) genre efforts released that even the list of runners-up posted at the end of this article represents a formidable survey of some really strong pieces of work. And it’s not all expensive, effects-driven stuff: the cheapest movie on this list cost under $10,000 to make (can you guess it?). The 21st century saw the dawn of the war on terrorism, as the 9/11 attacks and the Boston Marathon bombing dramatically changed society. Economic issues also moved to the forefront during the Great Recession as awareness of social inequality grew Mandy is a glorious, enveloping nightmare of sights and sounds. It puts an enormous amount of trust in Cage to be an audience surrogate with his own set of expectations and fears. Even as we descend deeper into this truly deranged story, Cage is both our guide, and the only one who can destroy the magnificent evil that surrounds his world. Clockwise from top: “In the Mood For Love,” “Blue is the Warmest Color,” “Brooklyn”Ah, poor, perpetually underrated Sunshine. The third collaboration between director Danny Boyle and novelist-turned-screenwriter Alex Garland is a crisp, tense, gripping space melodrama in which a team of scientists must fly to the sun and plant a nuclear device that will help the dying star reignite and save humanity.Sunshine borrows quite a bit from films like 2001, Alien, Dark Star, and Silent Running, but mashes them up in a satisfying and occasionally mind-blowing new mix.
The way that Area X transforms a familiar and bucolic setting into a haunted house of mutations and decay, while also working its way into the psyches of the women, is the stuff of ecological/psychological nightmares. Garland wrings the situation for maximum dread — both metaphysical and visceral — while the women dig under the surface of their ambiguously drawn characters. Garland freely changes the details of VanderMeer’s story while retaining its tone and meaning, with masterful results.Director Jeff Nichols (Loving) pays homage to Spielberg’s Seventies and Eighties classics with this moving story of an unusual child and the father who would go to any length to protect him. Alton Meyer is a strange kid who has a penchant for tuning into frequencies no human ears can pick up (like, say, intelligence agency satellites) and can do amazing things with his eyes. Naturally, this makes him a person of interest to both religious cults and government spooks. As we hit the road with our confused on-the-run hero, we realize that Midnight Special is more about our terrestrial problems than extraterrestrial invaders. It’s a powerful example of how to use adult-friendly sci-fi to illuminate the human condition as opposed to merely thrilling and distracting us. Lost in Translation is more than just the movie that more or less cemented Bill Murray’s comeback as a film actor. That part is important, sure, and Lost in Translation does benefit tremendously from what will probably be the best performance of his career. With a surprising lack of pretension, given that the movie is about two well-off, lonely people discovering one another while in Japan for different reasons, Lost in Translation is a beautiful tribute to Tokyo backdrop. The movie’s depiction of that loneliness by writer/direct Sofia Coppola, as well as through the performances of Murray and Scarlett Johansson, is more than just an artful portrayal.A cult favorite almost upon release, the menacing, often inscrutable and challenging Donnie Darko tells the strange story of the title character (Jake Gyllenhaal), a teenager tormented by visions of an impending apocalypse and his role in it.
Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet... just three of the amazing 1960s television series to come out of the Century 21 Studios in Slough Not only is it genuine sci-fi, but Arrival is a thrilling, gripping and emotionally powerful tale as well. With a terrific and heartfelt performance by Amy Adams at its center, the movie spins out a narrative that encompasses both an epic sense of space and time and an intimate portrait of how much the human heart and intellect are both capable of carrying. As frightening as some aspects of the story are, Arrival is ultimately optimistic about the future of humanity — another hallmark of great sci-fi filmmaking. Copyright © Linguapress Steven Spielberg was already toggling between his “serious movie” phase and his crowd-pleaser mode at the start of the 21st century – and this tricky futuristic, hard sci-fi fable, which openly undercuts the optimism of E.T. and Close Encounters, attempts to balance both sides. Based on a Brian Aldiss short story that was one of the late Stanley Kubrick’s abandoned projects, A.I. tells the story of an ultra-realistic robot boy (played by Haley Joel Osment) who’s abandoned by his human masters and left to search the world to learn his purpose. At once dazzling and despairing, the film is a sprawling odyssey that asks what makes us human – and doesn’t offer many reassuring answers. NM
Director/screenwriter Alex Garland’s brilliant follow-up to 2015’s equally riveting Ex Machina, adapted from Jeff VanderMeer’s eerie novel, is an unsettling hybrid of horror and sci-fi. Annihilation follows four female researchers (led by Natalie Portman and Jennifer Jason Leigh), each with their own agenda, as they investigate a mysterious alien zone encroaching on an American coastal region from which a dozen earlier expeditions have not returned. The development of their relationship and eventual destinies form the spine of Jonze’s allegory about our own increasing distance from each other and absorption in technology. Phoenix is heartbreaking as Theodore, but Johansson — never known for great line readings in her other movies — is terrific as the ever-evolving Samantha. As a metaphor for apartheid, Neill Blomkamp’s faux-documentary about aliens ghettoized in South African shantytowns is nothing if not blatant. As a genre-based action movie, however, the movie works its gritty, you-are-there feel to great effect, especially once Sharlto Copley’s bureaucratic lackey starts to experience a few, shall we say, physical changes of his own. It’s also doubles nicely as the announcement of a major talent who, Chappie or no Chappie, could very well influence the shape of science fiction to come. DFStarring: Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Christian Camargo, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, and Guy PearceThe Empire Strikes Back of the Apes prequels – darker than the first installment and operating on a grander canvas – Dawn is where Caesar takes his rightful place as this franchise’s towering central figure. Played by Andy Serkis, the reluctant ape leader tries negotiating a fragile truce with the surviving humans (including Jason Clarke and Keri Russell), but distrust on both sides soon proves tragic. Director Matt Reeves delivers a robustly epic sequel, crafting spectacular action sequences – the 360-degree tank scene is already a classic – alongside deft political commentary that touches on everything from the patriarchy to Israeli/Palestinian tensions. Who among us could not fall in love with Scarlett Johansson’s sultry voice and breezy demeanor as portrayed in Her – even if she is just a computer operating system? Spike Jonze’s post-postmodern love story reeks of all the hallmarks of every other sappy love story – infatuation, inadequacy, infidelity – and that’s what makes it so engaging. Joaquin Phoenix’s character falls in love with his PDA in such an endearing, all-too-human way that it feels real (and portentous), but it’s the way he tries to overcome all the odds of his impossible love affair work that makes the film heartrending. Even she is just an operating system. Spike Jonze’s fourth feature film is perhaps his most personal yet, exploring themes of loneliness and human relationships that have permeated all his previous work yet doing so in the context of genre and making them more universal than ever. In Mike Cahill and Brit Marling’s quiet indie drama, a mirror Earth is hurtling slowly but surely toward our own. The main focus, however, is on Rhoda (Marling), a young woman struggling to come to grips with the consequences of a terrible mistake from her past. As Earth 2 looms closer, so does the inescapability of our heroine’s actions. The concept is an exciting one: If we could come face to face with another version of ourselves, what would we say? Another Earth never answers the question, but it doesn’t need to; it simply has to spin a moody web around the hope and the anxiety inherent in the asking, which it does in spades. A Man Who Fell to Earth for millennials, Jonathan Glazer’s cryptic tale of an extraterrestrial femme fatale who discovers her inner human being is, in the truest sense of the word, awesome. Lots of movies have tried to channel that old Seventies sci-fi feeling, but Glazer’s visually sumptuous, genuinely unnerving movie is one of the few that feels as if it actually came from that fertile era of space oddities. There’s a sense of exploration in its elliptical storytelling that feels light years ahead of most modern aliens-among-us tales – and who knew that it would take playing a predatory, largely nonverbal creature to convince us that Scarlett Johansson was capable of such nuanced work? Director Alfonso Cuaron’s adaptation of PD James’ novel is a chilling nightmare, set in a future where human infertility has rendered society increasingly unstable (morality matters less when extinction is in the offing). The film’s rumpled, weary atmosphere, as embodied by conflicted hero Clive Owen – playing a cynical bureaucrat drafted into a potentially species-saving plot – and stubborn optimism (personified by Michael Caine’s aging hippie weed-dealer) combine to create a movingly tangible sci-fi tale that suggests that the end of the world, and its salvation, might not come with a bang, but a whimper. Emotionally resonant, daringly prophetic and disturbingly plausible, Children of Men is modern sci-fi storytelling at its apex. DM There’s a lot of evidence to suggest that in some ways we are living in a golden age of science-fiction cinema, which is most appropriate for the era that kicked off with the year 2001. Even people who are pretty much over that Wes Anderson guy will tell you The Royal Tenenbaums is good stuff. With the possible exception of 2014’s Grand Budapest Hotel, this may well be Anderson’s best work to date. Its style and atmosphere are quite frankly irresistible, and there’s something about its comments on family that seemingly most of us can relate to.

As far as the BBC are concerned, David Lynch’s surreal masterpiece about 2 women who befriend one another, as various forces of good and evil swirl around them, is the best movie anyone has made in the 21st century thus far. I don’t know about that, but it is certainly one of the most stunning, terrifying worlds anyone has ever committed to film. Mulholland Drive is a movie that suggests you can figure out everything that happens, which is a lot. I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Few movies demand the act of surrendering logic and expectations as compellingly as this film will. Just go with that. The less you demand, the more weird fun you’re going to have. What does it mean to be a successful learner or graduate in today's world? While in years past, a solid acquisition of the three Rs (reading, writing, and arithmetic) and mastery in the core academic subjects may have been the measure of attainment..
Taking into account the responses of 177 film critics from around the world, BBC has compiled a list of 100 top movies of the 21st century. The year 2000, despite not denoting the start of the century, has been included as it was a landmark year in terms of global cinema Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Tom Berenger, and Michael CaineThe cast is uniformly excellent, the movie is a feast of visual splendor, and the prevailing message is a nice reminder that science can be good for us.Anyone who thinks originality in film is dead needs to take another look around, and at least spare us their absurd assertion. Groundbreaking films with unforgettable stories and characters can be found in every year we’ve endured across the 21st century. It’s not that people are stupid. I just think we forget that finding movies with something to offer us, even if it’s only pure entertainment, sometimes takes a little work. This chronological ranking of the 15 best movies of the 21st century was difficult to assemble. When you cast a net over the past 19+ years of film releases, you wind up with a much greater range of titles than you ever realized. Franchises and/or superhero movies may rule theaters right now, but that doesn’t stop remarkable films from being made. This specific list barely had to leave North America to come up with 30 viable contenders, which was then cut down to the 15 we’re going to talk about today. If you don’t mind subtitles, I promise you the 21st century has enough new movies (new to you) to keep you invested and devastated for however much longer this century is going to go with us around.

Contagion probably comes pretty damn close to what a worldwide biological catastrophe might actually look like, and it’s not pretty.
