Though not many details have been divulged about the project, what we do know is that it will pit the team against the New Gods of Apokolips and New Genesis. Ones like Steppenwolf and Darkseid have already appeared in the live-action movies, but we expect the animated film to explore their origins and their world more exhaustively. For now, who will voice the characters is not known. We expect the original cast of ‘Justice League Dark’ to return and voice their characters, with more talent brought on board to voice the new characters. This is our first attempt to get at the zeitgeist of another culture to better understand its media, and the primary focus of our immersion (the part of the wave that's not aimed at teens) was film: In addition to the work of Bong Joon-ho, we touch on The Handmaiden, A Train to Busan, The Burning, A Taxi..
The electric opening to this two part adaptation of Frank Miller's classic miniseries, The Dark Knight Returns: Part 1 introduces an older, grizzled Dark Knight who is forced to come out of retirement to defeat a new and dangerous enemy, the Mutants. In his struggle to recapture the brutal physicality of the Batman and adopt a new Robin, Carrie Kelly, Bruce shows us why he is the only man worthy of the cowl. Not only does Batman beat the living hell out of gangsters and Mutants alike, but he helps reestablish Batman as the symbol he once was. This Website does not target people below the age of 16. 3) Justice League: Crisis on Two EarthsWhat began as the bridge between the DCAU’s Justice League and Justice League Unlimited developed into so much more. Crisis on Two Earths explores the evil Justice League of Earth-3 and their attempts to take over the main DC Earth. While the Justice Lords from the animated series were an adaptation on this plot, that version did not have James Woods as a nihilist Owlman and a strip-search scene for Lex Luthor. This movie spends just enough time on Earth-3, allowing us a glimpse at a host of alternate reality versions of some of DC’s most memorable characters (including the entire Shazam family!), before its wonderfully tense finale. 12) Justice League DarkLet’s get the film’s major problem out of the way; Batman should have never been in this movie. But otherwise, this adaptation of the first run of the eponymous comic is brilliant. It’s dark and creepy, and it employs some of the DC universe’s most underutilized and creative characters, weaved into the story with the kind of care only a superfan of the magical DCU could. do. Batman, understandably, plays a magic skeptic on this quest to stop the rise of an ancient evil, but clearly the only reason he’s there is so his face could be slapped on the DVD cover. His storyline is the only real distraction from an otherwise stellar adventure. This list contains the 28 DC Animated Original movies released so far, ranked from worst to best on the quality of their story, characters, and In the film based on a 2001 run of Action Comics, Superman finds himself obsolete after a group of more lethal heroes seems to find favor with the public Based on 2011's Flashpoint comic book crossover, this animated movie is arguably better than it's source material - thanks to the need to be standalone. Mask of the Phantasm helped inspire just about all of the films on this list, and especially subsequent Batman animated features like SubZero 11. SHARES. Facebook Twitter. 5. My Life As A Zucchini Despite its slight, barely over-an-hour running time, cutesy title, and gorgeously quirky animation, there is a shade of darkness that permeates the gently dramatic My Life As A Zucchini — the only title on this list not only to be a.. If a gun-toting Thomas Wayne (father of Bruce) and a war between the Amazons and Atlanteans for the fate of the planet won’t get you on board for this one, I don’t know what will. It’s great to see the Flash headline a film for once, and though he’s nearly overshadowed by the immense detail put into this alternate reality, he anchors the story with a light personal touch. This adventure set the New 52 into motion in the comics, and while not absolutely required viewing to understand its sequel, Justice League: War, it’s the best DC Animated original that fits into the series’ broadest continuity. Animation and DC, the feature-length animated film will be released by Warner Bros. In 2004, Fullmetal Alchemist won a TV Feature award at the Animation Kobe Awards and was one of the recommended titles by the jury of the 2004 Japan Media.. Marvel Studios may rule at the box office, but DC can proudly claim dominion over animated movies. Usually released direct-to-video, animated movies based on DC Comics have recently made the leap to theaters with Teen Titans Go! To the Movies — though a few recent direct-to-video films have seen limited theatrical release. But DC has long established itself as an animation titan, thanks to the movie spin-offs of its acclaimed series from the ’90s and early 2000s, and thanks to its ever-expanding DC Universe Animated Original Movies. Not sure yet what the films will be based on or if they are both original stories. This wouldn't be the first time we have had Batwoman in an animated film, so if you want just a sample I only started reading comics about 10 years ago but am connected more to DC over Marvel or any other major company The most recent film on the list, Justice League vs. The Fatal Five is a welcome return to the DC Animated Universe that Bruce Timm created. Like the comic it's based on, Flashpoint is a bleaker version of the DC Universe. It all leads to a final act that will make you wonder how this film got away..
Speaking of surprisingly introspective, the DC Universe made the bold choice to launch its initiative with the contemplative, slow-moving All-Star Superman based on Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely‘s seminal comic book series. It seems an odd film to kick off a whole universe of mature animated films, but looking back at All-Star Superman, it makes total sense. The film perfectly captures the essence of Superman and all his aspirational values that many filmmakers, and even comic book writers, can’t seem to grasp. It’s an earnest and buoyant depiction of a superhero that has become so familiar to audiences that he’s less of character than he is a cipher. But in All-Star Superman, he’s painfully, achingly human. All-Star Superman chronicles the last year in Superman’s life after he discovers that he is dying from absorbing a lethal amount of solar radiation. Though the story is interwoven with an action-packed plot involving Lex Luthor, the majority of All-Star Superman follows Superman as he settles his affairs, protects life on Earth, and spends time with his loved ones. It’s a beautiful, moving animated film that does justice to Morrison and Quitely’s profound 2005-2008 series. Based on characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, this drama series follows the origins of American fiction's most legendary criminal defense lawyer: Perry The six-part documentary series based on the book of the same name explores writer Michelle McNamara's investigation into the dark world of.. Inspiring former outlaws to become part of an underground group known as the Sons of Batman, and instilling fear in others, Bruce Wayne’s journey to become the Batman once more makes for a riveting story that makes us fall in love with the man he’s become and reminisce about the man he once was. Of course, former Robocop Peter Weller's voice work as the Dark Knight certainly didn't hurt. DC has a fantastic track record when it comes to casting voice roles, and they certainly hit it out of the park with Weller.. But it makes sense — the Caped Crusader is still the DC Universe’s most popular character and the one guaranteed to sell the most Blu-rays. Not to mention, those movies are just that good. But Batman: Year One stands apart from the rest in that it’s just an okay Batman movie, but it’s a damn good Jim Gordon movie. Based on the Frank Miller story of the same name, Batman: Year One follows a young Bruce Wayne’s origin story, as he takes on the mantle of Batman and ascends to become a powerful symbol against crime. The slow-burning animated film follows a lot of the beats of Miller’s 1988 graphic novel, but places great emphasis on the fascinating partnership between Batman and Jim Gordon. Bryan Cranston is fantastic as a wary, disillusioned Gordon, and in a prescient twist, Gotham‘s Jim Gordon Ben McKenzie voices Batman. There are a few distinctly Miller-style flairs in Batman: Year One that don’t gracefully make the transition to modern day (Catwoman is a dominatrix for some reason…?) but it’s a masterful adaptation of one of the most iconic Batman adventures to date.

(Welcome to Let’s Get Animated!, a column that spotlights the best of film animation. In this edition: the best DC animated films, from direct-to-video movies to theatrical releases.)Having said that, it’s natural that the fans await with bated breath for every next release in DCAU’s gauntlet, especially given the tremendous reputation that the DCAU has been able to establish among fans, with some iconic storylines adapted successfully onto animated media, and the final products, I daresay, turning out better than many of the multi-million superhero projects out there. 13) Justice League: Gods and MonstersThis Elseworlds tale could have easily been so edgy it hurt. Instead, it tells an interesting alternate history of a vampiric Batman, a Wonder Woman from Apokalyps, and Superman, son of Zod. The trinity, at odds with the world’s governments, try to figure out who created an army of scientist-slaying robots. This story was Justice League cartoon creator Bruce Timm’s passion project, and it shows. This brutal take on his family-friendly version of the League (as well as its companion shorts) are definitely worth a watch. You can withdraw consent at any time. 8) Batman: Year OneThe first of two Frank Miller adaptations, this movie is about Jim Gordon as much as it is about Batman, with Bryan Cranston cast as the perfect voice to play the commissioner. Both the Dark Knight and his police confidant both arrive in a crime-ridden Gotham (is there any other kind?) and over the course of a year, carve out a niche for themselves as crimefighters in a different mold than typical Gotham law enforcement. Though it has a few Miller-isms in it— Catwoman is a dominatrix, sigh— this is still a stellar addition to the Batman canon and worth watching by anyone with even a passing interest in the character. A much more recent entry on this list, Justice League: War is an adaptation of the New 52 story, Justice League: Origin. This film introduces us to a new DC animated universe set within the confines of the New 52 canon. This is the world of superheroes. The DC comics are a hub for some of the greatest heroes and villains. Dark though they might be, DC comics do not fall short of content and even when about a dozen movies are lined up in its live-action universe, there is so much potential in its comics that one single universe can’t take it all. To counter this, the DC universe has its own animated universe which runs in a different vein from the live-action movies and allows it more rein to consider its options with the material that it wants to use. Films of DC’s animated universe (the DCAU) are consistent in quality, unlike the current DCEU, and undeniably more fun. I am a fan of the DCEU, still, I have to admit that some of the animated gems in there are absolutely precious. The reasons for this could be multifarious.. Is there a proper viewing order? RobinWhile the best of the Damien trilogy, this middle entry in the Son of Batman saga is still pretty mediocre. After a stellar cameo by Weird Al Yankovic as Dollman, Batman Vs. Robin proceeds to take one of the most interesting New 52 storylines—Bruce’s discovery of Gotham shadow rulers The Court of Owls and Dick’s family’s involvement with the organization—and gives it to Damian, robbing it of any of its original context and meaning. While it retains some of the most iconic scenes of the comics run (like Batman wandering in the Court’s underground maze), the film plays out as a typical temptation story, and doesn’t resolve itself until Bad Blood.
It’s not often you get to see the Flash headline a film, and he does it with gusto in Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. The dark, thrilling, and brutal film depicts a dystopian alternate reality in which a war between the Atlanteans and Amazons threatens the fate of the world. But whenever the film teeters too far into grim-dark territory, Barry Allen brings it back from the brink. Barry’s signature combination of empathy and enthusiasm is the anchor for this film, which gives a frenetic, shocking portrait of a dystopian reality that could have easily been too bleak to bear. Here, Wonder Woman is a murderous Amazon queen, Batman is a grizzled Thomas Wayne, the Joker is the psychotic Helen Wayne, Superman is a skeletal time bomb, and the Justice League doesn’t exist. And then there’s the undercurrent of tragedy: that a grief-stricken Barry Allen accidentally created this timeline when he went back in time to save his mother from murder. It’s a premise that sounds great on paper, but ended up a bit of a convoluted mess in Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert’s comic book run that launched the New 52 age of DC Comics. But in the Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, it just works. It’s thanks to the emotional core that Barry Allen provides, transforming The Flashpoint Paradox into controlled mayhem instead of all-out alternate reality insanity. 1966: Batman: The Movie, feature film based on the contemporaneous Batman television series; starring Adam West as Batman, Burt Ward as Many in the film have incorrectly considered Batman to be a vampire. 2014: Lego DC Comics: Batman Be-Leaguered animated television special, with..

In fact, most of the films on this timeline are not part of the official animated movie universe. However, we love to create our own fan continuities 17) Batman: Gotham KnightUnofficially tied to the Dark Knight trilogy and featuring experimental new animation styles and explorations of smaller moments in the Batman mythos, this anthology was almost destined to succeed. Any of these six stories (specifically the Gotham P.D. adventure, “Crossfire”) would be a wonderful primer to one aspect of Batman’s world, but they’re so short they leave you wanting more. Watching all six in a row is akin to a dinner with too many courses: they might be great, but before you’ve finished it, it’s been whisked away and replaced with another dish. This one is a must-see for diehard fans of the Christopher Nolan films, however.
14) Teen Titans: The Judas ContractThough you may have seen a lot of the beats in this story play out in the Teen Titans cartoon series from the previous decade, this story of betrayal—based on arguably the greatest Teen Titans story ever written—should absolutely be experienced in movie form as well. After a new, young superhero named Terra joins the team (consisting of the Vs. Justice League roster of Damian Wayne, Blue Beetle, Beast Boy and Raven, led by Starfire and Nightwing) on a mission to stop Brother Blood—but it turns out she’s actually secretly working for Deathstroke to destroy the team from the inside. This more mature take on the Judas Contract storyline more mimics the comics than the cartoon and delves into Terra’s motivation. If they had more time or less Titans, this one could have been a classic. To the Movies and list the 10 best DC animated movies. Even the list of rejects and almost-rans is astounding: Robert Redford, Sly Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Burt.. 18) Superman: DoomsdayFew get it exactly right on their first try, and DC Animated was no exception. They brought some strong elements to the table on this premier attempt: a famous Superman story, a stellar voice cast, and a devotion to the source material rather than slavish obsession, but this unfortunately wouldn’t be enough. The titular Superman/Doomsday fight is well done, but much like the original Death of Superman storyline, the writers didn’t know where to go after Clark’s funeral. This film opts for a simplified Rise of the Supermen plot, starring a clone controlled by Lex Luthor as Kal-El’s replacement. This is a welcome improvement over the chaos of the comics run, (anyone else remember the Metropolis Kid?) but it’s this was never one of Superman’s best stories, and the adaptation doesn’t do much more than clean up the narrative a bit.

16) Green Lantern: First FlightOut two years in advance of the disastrous live-action film, First Flight nails a Green Lantern origin story in a way that Ryan Reynolds could have only dreamed of. Unlike its sequel, First Flight delves into Green Lantern mythology in an organic and entertaining way, showing the universe through the perspective of Hal Jordan instead of explanatory monologues. This Green Lantern story offers an interesting take on the fall of Sinestro, but suffers somewhat from trying to do too much in too little time. It’s unfortunate that this film didn’t get a direct sequel, as more installments could have delved deeper into Hal Jordan and comprehensibly expanded on one of the deepest mythoi in the DC universe. While the animation and voice acting may be a notch below a few of these other entries, Batman: Under the Red Hood tells the most compelling and heart-wrenching Batman story, making it DC's most enjoyable animated film from start to finish. Watching as Batman struggles to try and rehabilitate his ex-partner and deal with the guilt associated with letting Robin descend into madness makes for some of the best storytelling you’ll see on film, animated or not. For fans of Batman, fans of DC, and fans of film, Under the Red Hood delivers a magnificent story that will make you feel the grief and anger of the characters on a visceral level. This is a MUST WATCH. Our fingers remain firmly crossed that the villainous Red Hood makes his way into DC's shared movie universe in the very near future.

Smash Tier List Based On How Much They Annoy Me 27) Superman: UnboundThis Superman story isn’t bad so much as boring, but wow is it boring. This movie demonstrates exactly why people think there will never be another good Superman movie. In addition to the uninspired plot—Brainiac wants to shrink Metropolis… again, and it’s up to Man of Steel and his Kryptonian cousin, Supergirl, to stop him—the film tries to have its cake and eat it too by unshrinking the famously bottled city of Kandor and closing with Clark proposing to Lois. This too-neat wrap up and moral-heavy message is just what makes the Last Son of Krypton seem out of date.4) Wonder WomanWe now have Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot’s wonderful new film, but before that, this was the best Wonder Woman standalone story by far. While it’s no secret that she’s the least represented member of DC’s Trinity, it truly is amazing that there are more than 10 Batman starring or co-starring films on this list, more than five Superman films, two Green Lantern films(!) and only one Wonder Woman offering. This story, which has a strikingly similar plot to the live-action film (at least for the first half) is great in its own right.
